SJSU entered the game (4-0) while the Rainbow Warriors came in at (2-4). Like lightning, the Spartans jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter, with one score coming from a 2 yard pass by QB Nick Starkel to RB Isaiah Holiness on the opening drive, and the next two coming by runs from Senior RB Tyler Nevens of 72 and 10 yards respectively.
Hawaii would respond in the second and third quarters, scoring 17 straight points to bring the score to 21-17. However, SJSU would fight back in the third with a monster 18 play, 70 yard drive which took up 7:31 of playtime, capped off by a 2 yard run by Kairee Robinson. Nick Starkel would later throw another touchdown pass to star receiver Tre Walker, who caught a quick slant before turning up field for a 50 yard score. Hawaii would put up a valiant effort with one more score, but could not muster up a complete comeback and would eventually fall to the Spartans 35-24.
The Spartans rushed for 288 yards on 46 attempts, both season highs. Tyler Nevens and Kairee Robinson both surpassed 100 yards rushing, with 152 and 111 yards gained respectively. The Spartans defense played well, forcing 1 turnover on an interception by Jay Lenard, and one sack by Viliami Fehoko, who has now 5 on the year.
The Spartans are in Nevada tonight where they will take on the Wolf Pack for a spot in the Mountain West Championship game. The Spartans control their own fate, as a win will guarantee a spot to play for the conference title. With a win, the Spartans would most likely play Boise State for the title, however there are numerous scenarios that could create many different options for the game.
