Women’s:

OCT 13 – The Spartans’ women’s soccer team (0-9-4, 0-3-2 MW) hosted the UNLV Rebels (5-6-2, 3-1-1 MW) in another conference game at the Spartan Soccer Complex. Winless in 13 matches so far, the Spartans looked to grab their first of the season against a strong UNLV team.

Throughout the first half, the game was tightly contested. Both teams retained equal possession of the ball and both teams had great scoring chances. Ultimately, nothing came of it as the game was knotted up at 0-0 entering halftime.

But just 3 minutes into the second half, Michelle Madrid was able to score off a blocked shot to give UNLV the 1-0 lead. For Madrid, that was her first goal of the season.

And for those in attendance, that was the only goal of the game as it ended 1-0. The Spartans mustered up 11 shots, 3 more than UNLV. UNLV committed 20 fouls, but in the end no harm, no foul as SJSU was unable to capitalize. The Rebels move to 4-1-1 in Mountain West play as they continue to battle for 1st place. For the Spartans, they move to 0-4-2 and finish this game without a win on the season.

Men’s:

OCT 13 – The Spartans’ (3-4-5, 2-0-1 WAC) men’s soccer team hosted UNLV (3-6-2, 0-1-2) today at 1:30 pm following the conclusion of the women’s soccer game. The Spartans looked to clinch another conference win to stay in the race for the WAC crown.

Similar to the women’s game, the score was zero all at halftime. The difference here was that the Spartans dominated for all 45 minutes. SJSU had 5 shots and 3 corners, compared to UNLV’s single shot.

The second half was marred by referee controversy, as several questionable calls plus an Angel Iniguez rejection elicited quite the reaction from the crowd and Coach Simon Tobin. Despite the man disadvantage, SJSU continued to dominate possession. Unfortunately, it didn’t result in anything as this match concluded 0-0.

For the Spartans, they come away with a crucial point to stay in a tight race to the top of the WAC. UNLV escapes with a draw, but the Rebels still have yet to notch a win in conference play.
