OCT 30 – The Spartans’ women’s basketball team took to the court for the very first time this season in an exhibition game versus Oakland’s Lincoln University. The Spartans have 4 returning seniors, including star Jasmine Singleton. In addition, this team hauled in 5 new players through the transfer portal in what is considered to be one of the more stronger classes in the Mountain West.

Tonight’s game was no issue for the Spartans, as the score ended 81-37. In fact, this strong offensive showing was highlighted by the newcomers.

When Alabama A&M transfer Amiah Simmons had the ball, it was guaranteed she would drive through the paint for a layup or to draw a foul. Amiah Simmons finished with 22 pts, 10 reb, 1 block and 1 steal.

Houston transfer Djessira Diawara brought a level of aggression under the basket unlike I’ve ever seen before with this team. Diawara made it a point to put the ball up every time she could, while at the same time fiercely playing for the rebounds. Diawara’s play inside the paint led the Spartans’ offense to 22 offensive rebounds, leading to 24 second-chance points. On the night, Diawara finished with 13 pts, 6 reb and 1 assist.

Tulsa transfer Amira Brown also had a fantastic game, finishing with 14 pts, 9 reb, 3 assists and 1 block. Freshman Mecca Alexander displayed her ability to move the ball effectively, while Louisville transfer Hennie Van Schaik showcased an impressive ability to shoot from beyond the arc.

Overall, tonight’s performance leaves us with much hope about this team. The newcomers have seemingly transformed this team, and it will be exciting to see what they can do this season.  The Spartans will begin season play on November 5th, traveling to Cincinnati to take on Xavier University.
